We came here for the pastrami sandwich and we weren't disappointed! It's delicious and was a generous size. The owner/rabbi was very friendly and even blessed us for our journey. We will definitely come back when in Des Moines.

Today I brought my wife and her friend, who is originally from Staten Island, to Maccabee's for lunch. My wife's friend had missed the New York experience of the Kosher delis from back home. Between her corned beef on rye and chatting with Rabbi Jacobson, she made up for that lost time in about an hour. She really got a charge out of the whole thing and enjoyed everything. Rabbi Jacobson is a treat to talk with and so knowledgeable. He goes out of his way to make you feel welcomed in his deli. They have a great selection of books, drinks, foods and gifts from Israel. I have stopped in here too many times to count and have never experienced one bad moment or meal. It's a little slice of the Holy Land right in the middle of Des Moines - very cool!

I'm not going to pretend that I know much about Jewish culture and background in this review because I don't. I was in the mood for a good pastrami sandwich and I figured I couldn't go wrong visiting a kosher deli. When I walked in a was immediately greeted by Rabbi Jacobson with a hearty "Shalom!" Not being of Jewish background I responded back with a wave and a hello and I think the Rabbi got a good kick out of it. I told him I was looking for a tasty pastrami sandwich and the good Rabbi got to work whipping up a LARGE sandwich on warm pumpernickel rye with some brown mustard and a pickle. I opted for a side of coleslaw to complete my order. I must say the sandwich was very good. It was loaded with pastrami and the pumpernickel was warm and hearty. By the time I was done with the sandwich I barely had room for the coleslaw but I found room for it. I would recommend Maccabee's over and over again if you are looking for a deli that is unique. Too be honest, I wasn't aware there was a large Jewish population in Des Moines and even less aware that we had a kosher deli in town. The only reason I discovered it was due to stumbling over a link to it after a deli search on Google. I will be back as there looks to be some other tasty choices on their menu.

Nice little Kosher Deli, the Rabbi runs it not typical restaurant, rather a place that cooks kosher food on the side since it is connected to another building . Has a store for Kosher items as well. Food is good, had the matzo ball and corned beef, walked away happy.

Found this place and decided to give it a try and I'm very glad I did. The pastrami was wonderful and very lean. The owner was very friendly. I'll be back.

Great giant sandwiches!! One of the best turkey sandwiches I have had in town!!! All the meats are delicious as well as their tuna! Very satisfied! Don't judge this place on their outside appearance because once you get a taste of one of their sandwiches you will be planning your next visit back!! The best part of the deli is sharing your experience with the Rabbi!!!! Very satisfied!!
